Was surfing through Kai's website.
http://www.geocities.com/op_out74/ - maybe you wanna see it and think for yourself.
Never got time to read it after it has got updated. But was thinking about his work and thought it is good time to read it more and try to understand his work more.
This has got to be so many times which I mentioned htis, but I feel that artists do not really understand each other's practice. We just let things happen - it has been a long time since we have let things happen. Trying in recent years to make sense of what is happening and find it generally difficult since most artists tend to "evacuate" when we want to talk about their works. It happens on small talks but when it becomes more open talks - we tend to struggle to get answers...

Hello Jacki,
Thanks for your comments... they make a lot of sense... and good observation of the community here.

Since artists in Singapore are so diverse now... these ideas really illustrates the different positions which are evident in our community.

Yes, I miss those days in school when everyone was 'exploring' their art too!

In many ways, I also agree with your other friend who believes in the work speaking for itself. On the other hand, what happens when we ourselves as practitioners don't "get it" - how does the audience get it. Then the work falls into "oh art, so abstract. Just leave it."

Think our art system do not have the ability to sustain such way of working. Since we have an unbalanced proportion of having more producers of art than "translators" (writers, critics..) - the artwork cannot speak for itself because they are not being spoken through the others who speak about the artwork.

Thus, it is important to have artists articulating their work in some sort of way. It perhaps is a solution for the unbalance ratio.

Thanks for your comments... hope to meet up again.
