We are in the midst of moving, seriously under-staffed.

Not that we got a budget to play with at the moment.

Trying to work out projects and funding. Anyway, there are so many things to do but like what ah seng says, "I only got 1 hand" and he raises 2 hands. (A food #03 joke)

updates?

Well, been so busy -- that's how these blog entries beginning to sound the same old same old.

Anyhow, so let's start again, we are moving into Post-Museum over this past few weeks and kept ourselves busy with all these details.

And kind souls have been telling us that the place is nice and supportive as well - by coming to Food #03 -- the veg place @ Post-Museum. We really appreciate that.

Time to look at the long term involvement with Post-Museum and we really want to work with the community(not just the cultural community but in a broader sense) to keep this space (attitude) and find reason to keep this spirit alive.

We are still an independent space and hope that all who cares enough to keep it that way, keep supporting us and spreading the word of this new project, Post-Museum.

We are not interested in keeping this space to p-10 but want to share and grow Post-Museum to be something meaningful in this time.

setting up for Happy Together

We have been busy setting up the exhibition at Notthatbalai.

It took a little longer than we expected but we push forward :)

Busy also with the renovation -- and all the licensing still quite stressful situation. -- trying to get online and submitting applications and co-ordinating.

Actually, I suspect this is just the few times which we have to do some much home stuff away from home. Literally, a mobile office set up.

Anyway, hope to get more pics to upload next time and you can see how things are here!

Oh yes, Sze-Chin, Bruce and Lisa Kelly is also in KL. That's quite fun to see each other here.

ok, write more later.

Tuesday 17 July 2007

Arrived at KL -- setting up the show.

Jen and myself arrive in KL, we were delayed a little due to somethings cropping up with the renovations.

But we managed and got on the bus... although, I had to get Sze-Chin to the bus station to pick up mini-dv tape for his work.

Silly, me forgot to pass that on to him.

Anyway, more updates, I hope... I am on some very 'weak' connection in this hotel.

Dear friend,

Some of us are in KL this week (see last email) but for those of you who are in Singapore, these are the art events to check out this week:

1. Opening: Thu (19 July), 7pm

Hibernated Works Re-Engineered +33%

By Tang Mun Kit

The Substation Gallery (45 Armenian St)

Free

10 years after his residency in The Substation, Tang Mun Kit re-visits the residency process, the works made during the residency, and the exhibition that was presented after the residency ended (which was entitled Hibernated Works: Objects, Sculptures, Assets aka Materials vs Materialism). Among other issues, this exhibition is an attempt to highlight the ‘green’ nature of found objects, ie. a conservationist approach to artmaking through recycling, reusing and reducing. The exhibition runs till 5 August.

2. Screening: Thu to Sat (19 to 21 July),
8pm

Invisible City

Thu: University Cultural Centre, NUS; Fri: 72-13; Sat: The Substation

From an intrepid Japanese journalist hunting down Singaporean war veterans to an avid amateur film director trying to preserve his decaying trove of Singapore footage, Tan draws out hopes and regrets of these protagonists as they attempt immortality. Through footage and photos rarely seen until now, we begin to perceive faint silhouettes of a City that could have been. For more info, see http://invisiblecity.sg/.

3. Talk: Sat (21 July), 11am

History of Photography

Arts House (1 Old Parliament Lane)

Free (Register at www.monthofphoto.sg)

Singapore-based French photographer Gilles Massot provides his personal view on the impact of the development of photography. Exploring the theme, Massot will combine history, artistic intuition and phenomenology, and will try to cast new light on the way this medium has changes the human perception of the world, including a consideration of today’s so-called civilisation of images. Part of Month of Photography 2007.

Have a great week ahead and see you soon!

Regards,

Jennifer.

Have you seen ArtSingapore editorial?

ArtSingapore Editorial by Jennifer Teo

I quote at length...

[...]

Welcome to ArtSingapore. We are now well into 2007 and the Singapore art scene is starting to heat up after the first restful months.

Several incidents earlier this year have reminded us that Singapore and the art scene have still quite a way to go.

First, there was the World Economic Forum report which listed Singapore among the top 10 travel destinations but placed it 42nd (out of 124 territories) in the world in terms of human, cultural and natural resources. This is in spite of the celebrated "more than 6,000 performances and exhibitions last year" and "increase in funding for the arts to $15.5 million a year".

The second is the appeal from focas for financial support from the arts community to help it publish another issue, which will be featured in Documenta 12. focas has been funded by the NAC since its first issue, but in 2003 just before printing the fifth issue, the funding was cut "due to funding re-prioritisation". The issue was published, but since then, focas has been lying dormant. Publishing a journal in Singapore is an economically unviable venture and I am glad that focas has not become defunct, like many other art magazines in Singapore. But I am even gladder that focas has managed to gather the $20,000 it needs and 80% of this is from local sources.

The third incident which I want to mention began with a petition in October last year from the ArtsComm to our state media SPH in relation to inadequate coverage of the arts in The Straits Times. 55 people signed the letter and then a group of about 50 people gathered at The Substation to further discuss the matter and possible lines of action. In February this year, a representative group of the ArtsComm had a meeting with the editorial team of The Straits Times who conceded that they were "committed to cover the arts over and above the readership level".

new residency - Feature Bruce Quek

Bruce is a young person who believes that a great many things are funny. As a result (or in spite of) his training in sculpture at LASALLE, his work is centered around investigatory practices and strategic interventions, using any number of media and methods, such as found sound, performance, text and so on. He is also an amateur photographer and occasionally attempts to write.

He is currently serving his national service, which happens to be an excellent way to study bureaucracy.
