p-10 Picks (10 - 16 Dec)

Dear friend,

Here is our selection for this week:

1. Now on!

The Wire Episode #4

By The Danger Museum (Singapore)

http://www.server-foundation.org/wire/

Free

The Wire: Cultural Podcast of the 21st Century is a cultural podcast initiated by Simon Petre and Woon Tien Wei for The Danger Museum (Singapore) and presented by ArtSingapore. It is a project responding to the lack of independent media coverage during the time of the Singapore Biennale. Episode #4 is On Thoughts on the Singapore Biennale 2006, Vandalism of Substation and National Museum Preview; there is also a new segment called ‘Ask Isrizal’.

2. Opening: Thu (14 Dec), 6.30pm

Square of Infinity

By Bronson Chan, Carrie Huang, Ella Magee, Fredi Sonderegger, M. Kamal Dollah, Noor Effendy Ibrahim, Raman Meyappan, Subashini Balasubramanian & Tan Ai Khim

The Substation Gallery (45 Armenian St)

Free

This is an inter-disciplinary art exhibition showcasing the in-process works of nine practicing artists in their separate research as part of the Master of Arts in Contemporary Practice programme at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and University of Huddersfield, UK. This exhibition examines the contemporary relocation and negotiation of a diverse range of disciplines and forms, from the traditional to the immediate and contemporary. The exhibition continues till 18 Dec.

3. Thu & Fri (14 & 15 Dec), 8pm

Voyeurages

By Cat Hope

72-13 (Mohd Sultan Rd)

Free (call 6737-7213 to reserve a seat)

Cat Hope is an accomplished sound artist, performer, composer, songwriter and noise artist whose practice is increasingly an interdisciplinary one that crosses over into video, performance and installation. This is a work that speaks about contemporary concepts of journey and visitation. Exploring these concepts and juxtaposing them with the visual impact of viewing the images on the naked backs of participants, this work delves into the confrontational effects that come with the unique experience of exploring new spaces on a provocative plane – the naked human torso.

Have a wonderful week ahead!

Regards,

Jennifer.

p-10 picks (3 - 9 Dec)

Dear friend,

Here it is again -- our not-to-be-missed picks for this week:

1. Opening: Wed (6 Dec), 7.30pm

re-ACTION

By Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD)

The Substation Gallery (45 Armenian St)
Free

Nine young artists like Harman Bin Hussin, Dino Hafian Bin Ahmad and Rudy Djoharnaen present their responses and reactions to the theme of entrapment, or Sangkar (meaning 'cage' in Malay). re-ACTION is a revival of the popular ACTION series in the early nineties with young artists presenting new works. The exhibition continues till 11 Dec.

2. Opening: Thu (7 Dec), 7.00pm

Helen Keller Played the Piano

By Akiko Koga

BooksActually (125A Telok Ayer St)

Free

Japanese photographer Akiko Koga showcases her recent works. Photography is the one thing that makes her really happy and she just loves to keep snapping pictures of stuff that tickles her. She creates a lot of her art from everyday subjects and paints a picture of a world she 'chooses' to see. Her photographs are bittersweet, nostalgic, quirky and a little dorky. This is her 3rd solo exhibition. The exhibition continues till 21 Dec.

3. Now – 31 Jan 07

Interrogating Time, Hidden Histories

National Museum of Singapore (93 Stamford Rd)
Free

This project consists of three new artworks commissioned for the opening festival. The artists were invited to explore the process of conceptualising history through visual means and to respond to the physical environment and architecture of the new museum. The artworks are Singa Merlionus (David Chan), Contours of a Rich Manoeuvre 2006 (Suzann Victor) and Waking the Fluorescent Lion (Brian Gothong Tan). While you are there, do also take a look at the five permanent public artworks, especially Matthew Ngui’s The Building Remembers.

Have a wonderful week ahead!

Regards,
Jennifer.

=================================================================

Dear friend,

We are starting this weekly announcement of art events which we think should be interesting and which we recommend you check out. We hope this list of exhibitions, openings, talks, etc would be helpful to you.

Our selection this week:

Now – Thu (19 Oct)

Everything That Went Before This. Paintings. Ian Woo.

The Substation Gallery (45 Armenian St)

11am – 9pm

Free

In Everything That Went Before This, the language of painting takes on multiple roles where stacked manifestations of gesture, words and space, intertwine and modulate to re-construct a momentary state of cognitive conundrum. It is a state that reinforces the flux of perceptive memory to accept its fractured nature as a formless whole. It is important that everything that went before and after within each painting succumb the viewer to begin a dialogue of the ‘now’.

Fri (20 Oct)

Opening: 7pm

Kill nothing but time, Take nothing but photographs, Leave nothing but footprints.

A photographic installation by Robert Ern-Yuan Guth

Your MOTHER gallery (91A Hindoo Rd)

Free

For more information, see www.geocities.com/madlynettepress/killnothingbuttime.html. Exhibition continues till 19 Nov (by appointment only: 6396 3310).

Sat (21 Oct)

2 – 4pm

Drawing Propositions – Suggestions, Experimentations and Possibilities

#2-08, Seminar Room, Wing B, NAFA 1 (80 Bencoolen St)

Free

The forum aims to serve as a platform to enable artists whose drawings are showcased in the exhibition WithDrawing to propose their ideas to a professional audience of art practitioners as well as to invite responses from the latter in jointly looking at drawing possibilities today. The panellists are Hong Sek Chern, Tang Ling Nah, Tang Da Wu, Tan Guo Liang and Cheo Chai Hiang.

Hope to see you there!

Regards,

Jennifer.

The past few days, I have been trying to finish writing some overdue article which I meant to write. It has been quite fun keeping myself busy like this but it is really overdue.

The text kind of covers the thoughts which came up while I attended / was involved with some events like: Encounters 13 + Documenta Magazine meetings (Chiang Mai + Singapore).

Meanwhile, the Got No Puppamumma exhibition opens tomorrow at our new site. (note: this is a pre-renovation show). Do come by if you are free. for more details click here.

Encounters: A mole rat

You might have heard - our office will be moving to a new space on Rowell Road.

We started packing the store room today.

It was pure chaos inside.

Jk, James and myself encountered a rat and after much fuss, we managed to chased it out.

Due to the open concept design of our SPACE B, we get such visitors.

I hate to throw things away unless it is totally necessary. We will be putting stuff out for people who might want it. (free-cycle style*) Giving these items a new lease of life. It is a way to promote a share culture. OF course if you wish to donate money to p-10 for these items, we welcome that. Any form of donation / exchange to keep us going is important to us.

Here is an image of the 2 wooden crates (originally given to us by our Ayuveda neighbours, used for shipping) we are passing on to anyone who wants to use this. They make quite good shelves.

If interested, let us know.

Thanks.

The calm before the storm

Hi all,
Sorry we've been quiet on this blog for so long.
Just been busy with our daily chores, and also getting ready for the coming mad months.
Oh, you haven't heard? We're expanding... but more about that in a month or two.
Having less than a month - in fact, less than two weeks - is our first-ever Singapore Biennale which we hope will take our beloved little country by storm this year and every alternate year to come. Well, we will see. Right now, all is quiet on that front too.
So this must be a good time for me to sleep.
Here's wishing you dreams of grandeur.
I'll write again soon, perhaps when the storm has subsided.

- Jen.

Hey heh!
Finally, got some chance to update our blog abit. Been busy as usual -- Jen and me is on tour to Melbourne and Sydney now.

Also I am now on very expensive bandwidth -- I am so conscious of every minute because it costs a lot of money. Evil. (we should not take our internet provider for granted)

Some updates: If you have not caught the current exhibtion @ p-10 Space A.

p-10 forum is up again!

Finally, we 've got the forum up again.

As you may have heard, our forum was hacked due to an un-updated phpforum. Actually, Kakit was telling me that day that he was rather amused by the page that took over our forum.

It was a page with 'revolutionary' looking middle east text, not really sure what it is though.

Did a search on it but couldn't find out what it was.

We went to the Lasalle Grad show finally. What I liked about the environment of the grad show was that you had to explore the campus and in that wandering around from 'exhibition to exhibition' you bumped into people, saying 'hellos' and catching up with those whom you have not seen for a long time.

Then I realised that I said that I was waiting to find out which grad show was better. Lasalle vs. NAFA - who was better.

Boon was saying that he wasn't gonna write on every work but he wanted to pick out one or two works and write about it. Comments on what I think will come later.

NAFA GRAD show.

First, Jen and Myself came back sometime last week from Perth. (got something to talk to us? Drop a mail or call...)

Big thank you to rest of team to kept p-10 going while we were gone. Yes, feeding the fishes and watering the plants.

But when we returned, we were swept up by Election Fever and was busy following it.

Today, Kit, Jen & myself attended the NAFA Degree + MA graduation show.

I have to say that this year's graduates (Visual Arts) seemed better than the previous year.

Nothing really specific but just an overall feeling. I think the teaching staff also has changed since the last year. Maybe this could be the result.

A friend, whom I will not name here, who have seen the grad show @ LAsalle told me that , "Seems like NAFA graduate show looks better" Or was it interesting?

Well, we can only see the Lasalle show next week to do any comparison.

Although, well, few works which still stick in my mind are mentioned below:
(in no particular order)
* Isabelle's Performance
* Justine Lee's PErformance & his wall graffiti
* This Japanese female artist who did an advanced artist dictionary. (actually I really liked this piece.) It was very quiet but quite considered.

Well, that's all for now. We are working on some new projects for now. More updates at a later date.

more on Singapore art

Here's something I've been working on for a while: http://www.artsingapore.org/ - a web portal for information on contemporary art in Singapore.
The first edition contains special features on Lee Wen and Lee Weng Choy, both important in the local art scene. Click on Featured Writings - Featured: to see these. In particular, make sure you check out the 4 writings by Weng, which are available for download until 15 June only.
In addition, under Featured Writings, you will also find a few new exhibition reviews written by Boon of p-10, which are also definitely worth reading.
Lastly, not to be missed are other important information placed in the News, Scheduler and Web Resources sections.
Have a read and let me know what you think! -Jen.

Just a note to say hi as i've been absent too long.
It's been a really busy time in p-10 as we've been working on a series of exciting projects for the year.

important news missed out/?

I missed out a piece of news.

The 'exhibition guide' for Errata is finally published (100 copies).

It is a prequel to the upcoming publication which at this point of time seems very thick and sexy.

The 'Errata exhibition guide' has the curatorial essay, Koh's research notes and picture gallery. It is available at p-10 for anyone who wishes to read it.

It costs $25. All proceeds will go into the final publication. Look forward to anybody's comments. On this topic, I am reminded of a point which Ray brought up at the Editorial meeting (documenta) about Errata being an exhibition project.

I replied that it is an exhibition project all this while, although the exhibition model is not adequate to fully explore the subject. In fact, it shouldn't be the final resting place. As we last packed the collection into the storage, knowing in our hearts the solution which we were seeking for the collection is still not resolved.

Next thing: I M BREATHER: PART II: Paradise/Terrorise was covered in Life last Saturday. Anybody has any comments on that? Chai Hiang said the article was good.

I M BREATHER PICS

I M BREATHER opens last thursday. We had part III: Jeremy Hiah artist talk.

The turn out was luke warm. About 13 turned up. Jen said, it was too much events in two weeks. We should have spaced out in the month. Well, all not lost since we have recorded the talk on video.

The video should be ready in a week's time - so visitors can view that.

Meanwhile, took some pictures of I M BREATHER Part I: Painting.

To Chiang Mai and back, STILL BREATHING

Jennifer and me just went to Chiang Mai last week. It has been a rather eventful trip.

Firstly, we met up with some of our friends (SOK SAK, ol' Switch media, Uthit) over there and caught up with what they are doing. Next, we attended the documenta 12 (Thailand) editorial meeting and visited The Land Foundation.

A good four days. Then we rushed back with lots of work to do for our upcoming exhibition and a head full of 'ideas'. :)

When we returned to Singapore, we attended the documenta 12 editorial meeting at the Substation. That was also good for us since, we were fortunate to be able to see both symposiums and we got a chance to compare our personal notes. (Maybe the notes will be published in Art Singapore later on.)

Now that the whole symposium is over, we back to preparing for the upcoming activities at p-10.

LAO YU SENG on friday @ p-10 as it will be hosting ENCOUNTERS 08: COM & COM.

ALL INVITED. Time of the year to toss up some luck.

Next will be I M BREATHER, an exhibition of works by Jeremy Hiah.
